Ranabir Chakraborty, has been with Lead - Acid Battery Industry, for more than 40 years, starting with Exide Industries Limited for 26 years, having worked in its Shamnagar factory, heading Corporate Projects and then heading Manufacturing operations of all its plants as President Manufacturing. During his stay in Exide he got exposure to various battery making plants and machinery manufacturers across the world. He also attended various Battery Conferences and presented papers. During his Project days he modernized all its plants from primitive Chloride state to its Modern state, after the change of Management in early nineties. Every plant was expanded to meet growing demands. He also set up two green field units, at Hosur and Bawal. He was instrumental in acquiring two smelting units. Exide having two Japanese technology partners, he was fully involved in transfer of technology of VRLA from Shinkobe and then, improved operation of SF batteries at Taloja with the help of Furukawa. Post retirement he has been providing Consultancy to various battery companies. Starting with Luminous, Minda MC Battery unit, Sukam and LIVGUARD. He also worked with Panna Batteries Bangladesh, to modernise and expand its operation. He also set up a small unit in Nepal for Megatech. During his stay in Exide and even after that, several Indian Companies were helped with inputs to develop and grow, namely Ador Powertron, Associated Powercon, Mahindra, Rane Ovens, Abhison Engineering, Hydrochem, Devaki, ACS , Cimtrix to name a few. Presently an Emeritus Professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Through his, creative, interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research, Ashok Shukla has made extensive fundamental and applied contributions to the fields of storage batteries, redox-flow batteries, fuel cells and Supercapacitors. His research works on novel electrocatalysts, lithium-ion cathodes/anodes, lead-carbon ultracapacitors, nickel-iron batteries and tropical lead-acid batteries are truly path breaking. Professor Shukla has guided two dozen Ph.D. students and has more than three decades of teaching experience as Professor in India’s premier R&D and academic institution, namely Indian Institute Science, Bangalore. During his PhD thesis in chemistry at the University of Namur (Belgium), Dr. Comès has developed innovative catalysts for the direct valorization of carbon dioxide. The materials synthesized were silica-based, porous and functionalized. The results of his research were subjects to 8 published articles in peer-reviewed journals. Thereafter, he moved to Luxembourg for a post-doctoral position at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). His research activity was dedicated to the development of non-conventional analytical method via SS-NMR for understanding the compatibilization process of silica and polymer matrix, notably for the tire industry.
